  • A child responds well when they feel like they are being listened to
  • Teaching your child to speak another language, if you speak one.
  • Talking about your child’s routine with them throughout the day
  • Example: “ after you brush your teeth what do we do?” “ eat breakfast”
  • Using a lot of different words with your child
  • Having your child play with other children.

Signs of a Speech Disorder

It is believed that there is no real right way of how to speak. However, we are accustomed to how different words should sound. The way we say words and pronounce certain sounds is the basis of speech. Signs of a speech disorder in young children include:

1–2 years Not saying p, b, m, h, and w the right way in words most of the time
2–3 years Not saying k, g, f, t, d, and n the right way in words most of the time. Being hard to understand, even to people who know the child well.

* It is normal for young children to say some sounds the wrong way- it is the way they learn that is important-. Some sounds do not develop until a child is older*

What You Can Do

  • Being the model for your child to copy from. For example, practice repeating words they usually mispronounce and saying sounds the right way
  • Not correcting speech sounds. It is okay if your child says some sounds the wrong way.
